A Beginner's Guide to Elite: Dangerous - Part 1 - How To Get Started

The sidewinder is outmatched fairly easily. While doing trade runs, if I get intradicted, as soon as I drop out of super cruise I put all power to engines and do a boost.

I then point myself towards the planet I'm flying to and keep boosting until I can super cruise out again. If you take too much hull damage, don't bother repairing.

You can just die and get a free starter ship again. Trading is actually pretty straight forward. This is the route I've been doing there might be a better one:.

I find my client is much more likely to crash when I'm in a dogfight than it does when I'm trading. I got around six kills before I realized I needed to pick a faction to get paid.

But now I know what to do. I'm still to get the game working properly but any starter tips are always useful. Go to one and just kill all the ships that have a wanted bounty, just avoid the anaconda.

Also be on the look out for free cargo drifting around, they are good to pick up and you can make a small profit on the black market.

You can actually jettison the cargo near the other ships and the pirates will go for it. I've actually got a little routine of dropping a canister and hiding behind an asteroid to watch.

I've just discovered that. It's also interesting to see that the npc's that are mining always drop a canister mainly been finding copper if you space them.

You can target the cargo hatches and pirate the canisters, it's easiest with gimballed weapons. Anacondas spill more cargo than a little sidewinder can carry if the hatch is taken out.

For me it shows I have to pay credits if I die to claim my free starter sidewinder. Am I clicking the wrong button? Sounds like you're choosing to pay insurance on an existing load out.

The 'free' sidewinder button gives you a loaned pulse laser and costs nothing. The thing is I did not have the CR but still lost any credits I had.

One of the buttons the left one was even red and I clicked the right one which I thought was the free options. I had about CR so it didn't matter much anyway.

Still, I was confused and a little bit frustrated. A bit more time under my belt and I got myself docked, and I think I can see what I was doing wrong I was facing the wrong way!!!

But I'm getting my arse shot off out there. It might not seem like much at first. But the extra travel distance, not to mention the early cash infusion, will eventually make an exponential difference in your bank account.

Please see the instructions page for reasons why this item might not work within Elite Dangerous.

Fortunately, the game includes a solo mode. And its single-player offering is much safer than the environment Elite: Dangerous players will find waiting for them in Open Play.

Dangerous in the safety of Solo Mode. As your bank account begins to grow, AI-driven pirates and bounty hunters will replace their human counterparts, forcing players to put their piloting skills to the test.

At its best, Elite: Its player-driven combat may not generate the kinds of headlines we see from similar titles, like EVE: Dangerous will remember where they first saw an Imperial capital ship for many years.

But, for many players, most of your time with Elite: Dangerous will be spent pretty far removed from the rest of the community.

And space can be quiet, lonely place. Personally, I recommend filling that silence with your favorite tunes. Dangerous makes a pretty great podcast game, too.

Regardless of your career path, there will come a time when you have enough cash to replace your Sidewinder or whatever other space-faring vessel you're currently piloting.

Just remember that the shipyard is going to give you a horrible price on whatever upgrades you've purchased for your ship.

Rather than eating significant losses on your purchases, take the time to return to the nearest Outfitter and swap out your upgraded parts for less-expensive alternatives before selling your ship.

And why would you ever leave money on the table in a game like Elite: Or even keep the ones you start with. For traders, this rule never really changes.

Rather than letting those weapons add to your overall weight, thereby reducing the distance your ship can jump, sell your weapons back to the Outfitter and use the extra credits to increase the cargo space on your ship.

It might not seem like much at first. But the extra travel distance, not to mention the early cash infusion, will eventually make an exponential difference in your bank account.

There are lots of ways ot make money in Elite: Getting tired of running goods from one system to the next? Grab some mining tools, find an extraction site and dig for interstellar gold.

While they are a bit dry you should at least watch the basic flight, docking, and travel ones. Travel beyond the stars in the best space games on PC.

Always request docking when you are less than 7km from a station. They do not take kindly to ships flying into their mail slots without permission.

As they are keen to remind you, loitering is a crime punishable by death. Seasoned commanders will always have a place in their heart for the Sidewinder, but the fact is it is not much good at anything in particular.

It lacks range, firepower, and cargo space. This limits what you will be able to do in the early game so you will want to move on from it as soon as possible.

To do that, you will want to try to establish a home base to work from so you can make some cold, hard space dosh. Elite Dangerous takes a lot of factors into account when calculating its mission payouts.

You will not be aligned with anyone when you are fresh in the cockpit, so start gaining a reputation with local factions and increase your system influence.

Jobs you should be looking to pick up are:. You can make the early game — and the rest of it — considerably easier by investigating Elite Dangerous mods and installing them to your tastes.

Now that you have got some errands to run you will need to know how to get your destination. You will spend the bulk of your time travelling either within a system or between systems.

This is how you travel around a system. A system will always have at least one star, around which it will have any number of planets and moons, stations, and asteroid belts.

Supercruise is your faster-than-light travel that will get you between these bodies. It can be difficult to judge how far away you are from an object when distance is measured in light seconds Ls.

Not decelerating in time can result in you overshooting your target. Avoid the illegal or combat-based missions for now, as these either require more advanced flying techniques or can get you into some pretty serious faction trouble.

That means the place has loads of them, and will be flogging them off to anybody. Hopefully the station will sell something you can afford with your credit starting budget.

Write them down if necessary, and then look at the galaxy map to see whether any are relatively close by. If you can reach the destination, then buy the goods and head off there.

Bear in mind that systems often have multiple ports of differing economic status, so you may have to locate the specific port the resource is exported to.

Just be aware that the data may not always be up-to-date. Setting your Hyperspace target can be done in a couple of ways.

The dot is your destination. Travel between systems is done through Hyperspace, but travel within systems is referred to as Supercruise. Now, use the navigation tab left-hand cockpit panel to select a dock, port or platform to head towards.

You can also use the system map to look at the different available space stations, and find out what services they offer shipyards, commodities market and so on.

The trick to getting to a destination as quickly as possible, while not overshooting it, is to go at maximum speed until the timer is at around the second mark.

Once it is, decelerate so the speed indicator is towards the bottom of the blue-marked portion of your dashboard.

The timer will start going up again. Now work the throttle to keep the time around the 7 second mark. Dangerous also provides a couple of indicators over on the left hand side of your cockpit display, showing a distance and speed bar.

Once you get close to a destination in Supercruise, you can use these bars to keep your speed matched with the distance. Dangerous will invite you to safely disengage your Frame-Shift Drive again, should be J, but you can check in your key bindings in case you have a separate key bound for leaving Supercruise.

While cruising through an unfamiliar zone, your default discovery scanner may have identified some unknown planets or stars. These can be a nice credit bonus if you sell them to the cartographer at a space port generally you get more money for selling the data further afield, but early on a quick injection of credits or so can be very useful.

Even in solo play, people are going to try to kill you.
